DRED SCOTT VS. SANDFORD

The Dred Scott Decision was a landmark decision made by the Supreme Court that had ruled slaves as property. It had clarified to that slaves that slaves were not citizens and that they do not have any rights.

PLAINTIFF: DRED SCOTT

Dred Scott was born on 1795 in Southampton, Va. He was sold to John Emerson, an army physician. Scott had lived with his master for several years in a state that had prohibited slavery. After his master's death he had tried and win his freedom, and his fight had lasted ten years, going from one court to another, all the way to the Supreme Court.

Irene Emerson is the widow of John Emerson, Dred Scott's owner.
